This month we are focussing on how to stay safe in the sunshine to protect our skin. With a few playful habits, you can enjoy being outdoors while lowering your risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage. Staying safe in the sun doesn’t have to feel like a chore. You can turn it into a game or routine:
- Play “shade tag”: Whenever you’re outside, challenge yourself or friends to hop between shady spots whenever possible.
- Set a “sunscreen song”: Put on your favourite 2-minute song while applying sunscreen so you don’t rush. Reapply every 2 hours, or sooner if you’ve been swimming or sweating.
- Accessorise like a superhero: A wide-brimmed hat, UV-blocking sunglasses, and lightweight long sleeves can become your signature “sun shield” outfit.
- Freeze fruity treats: Make ice lollies from fruit juice or blend frozen fruit into smoothies to help stay cool and hydrated.
- Plan adventures around the sun: Go for walks, bike rides, or sports in the morning or later afternoon when the sun is less intense, and save the middle of the day for indoor games or a picnic in the shade.
- Water challenge: Keep a reusable water bottle nearby and see if you can finish it by lunchtime, then refill it for the afternoon.
- UV detective: Check the day’s UV forecast before heading out and make a habit of packing your “sun kit” (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, and water) whenever the UV is high.
